For insurance purposes: All drivers of Thrifty rental vehicles must be 18 or over.
Drivers of all other rental vehicles must be 25 or over.
The university has a formal rental contract with Thrifty Rentals (845-1306). The department may issue renters a rental credit card which bills directly to the department. This card is issued for pre-approved department funded uses. All Thrifty rental contracts with the university include a Loss Damage Waiver (Full Comp & Collision) and liability insurance rated at $1,000,000 per accident.
The following rental agencies may be used for pre-approved department funded activities via pre-negotiated UC contracts. Each agency will use a UC corporate code (listed below) that locks in a special rate that includes a Loss Damage Waiver (Full Comp & Collision) and liability insurance rated at 100/300/25 ($100,000 per person, $300,000 per accident, $25,000 total property). Reservations and payment must be made by the renter. Payment will be reimbursed by the department.

The department requires that department funded rental of vehicles not covered by a UC corporate contract (Ex: 15 passenger van from an agency other than Thrifty) be insured by the renter with a Loss Damage Waiver and liability coverage of at least 100/300/25. Vehicles carrying a large passenger load (8 or more) must carry insurance equal to or greater than the maximum coverage offered by the rental agency.
Note: The university is not required to reimburse the cost of insurance for vehicles rented outside of a UC corporate contract. The renter should take this personal cost into account when choosing a rental vehicle. All costs for damages incurred under an outside contract will be acquired from the renter's insurance (either their personal insurance or that purchased from the rental agency). Costs that extend beyond the parameters of the renter's insurance will be covered by the university (Ref: BUS-75).
