May 1996 the ASC held a symposium with the Beltsville Area, Agricultural Research Service, USDA on "Global Genetic Resources: Access, Ownership, and Intellectual Property Rights." The symposium volume is in press. According to Dr. Hoagland the ASC believes there could be unintended consequences for basic scientific research and for country's ability to understand and use its biodiversity, if country legislation based on principles of the CBD overly restrict the ability of systematists to perform their internationally-based comparative research on the world's biota (Hoagland, 1996).

The Guidelines for Institutional Policies and Planning in Natural History Collections Chapter 11 is on Field Research and Collecting. This chapter outlines "collecting etiquette" such as obtaining research permits, finding an institution or sponsoring scientist in the host country, exchanging of information, stating the purpose of the visit, including host country students, and building institutions. These principles are consistent with the Biodiversity Research Protocols.

The ASC Guidelines for Institutional Database Policies are not consistent with the Biodiversity Research Protocols proposed by the Pew Conservation Fellows. The document discusses the ethical way to share, collect, and conserve systematic collections among large institutions.

The Cultural Conservancy will aid indigenous peoples in land acquisition, land trusts, property rights, intellectual property rights, and cultural conservation. The Cultural Conservancy has recently completed a "Native Knowledge Working Group Information Packet" that contains current articles on biodiversity issues, intellectual and cultural property rights, globalization, and the human genome diversity project. In addition a packet addressing the issues above from a legal and historical perspective entitled "The Commodification of the Sacred."
