The World Bank Discussion Paper 188: Indigenous Views of the Land and the Environment
is a collection of three case studies. It does not have any guidelines or discuss
issues such as intellectual property rights. The case studies do make some recommendations
when working with Indigenous Peoples on cooperative resource management to collaborate,
educate, and involve the community.
The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program Information Sheet., The World
Bank and the Environment Fiscal 1993 , Operative Directive : Environmental
Assessment , and Operative Directive: Involuntary Resettlement do not
have guidelines and do not discuss issues related to the Biodiversity Research Protocols
proposed by the Pew Conservation Fellows.
The Operative Directive: Indigenous Peoples lists World Bank policies and
discusses some issues related to the Biodiversity Research Protocol proposed by the
Pew Conservation Fellows. In the first section, 'the World Bank Indigenous Peoples
Development Plan: Prerequisites to a Successful Development Project,' it is required
to get informed participation, and if possible incorporate indigenous tenure systems.
The World Bank recognizes the controversial issues involved with development projects.
They divide the debate into two poles. One pole wants to protect and maintain cultural
distinction while forfeiting economic development. The other pole argues that indigenous
peoples must be assimilated into the national economy and social structure.
