  • "Women and the Family Farm: Hesiod, Virgil and 'A Thousand Acres'" - Looks at the role of women in farming, and asks whether traditional farming leaves any role for women. Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment, Kalamazoo, Michigan, June 1999
  • "Exotic and Native: Voices in a Landscape." - Uses personal narrative and two interviews - one of a Hispanic immigrant and farmer, one of a Pomo woman recently returned to the Rancheria, to explore questions of place identification.   • Putah-Cache Bioregion Project. Barilla researched the history of Putah Creek and composed the "Exotic and Native" piece detailed above. Publication forthcoming as one of Putah/Cache Bioregion series
