Brief Biography:
Philip Fradkin was a staff writer and environmental writer for the Los Angeles Times. He shared in a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Watts racial conflict. He has also served as the Assistant Secretary for the California Resources Agency and Western editor of the Audobon Magazine. He taught writing at Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley, and he is the author of seven books on California and the American West, two of which have been nominated for Pulitzer Prizes.

  • Lectured on earthquakes and natural disasters at the California Academy of Science and the Oakland Museum
  • Numerous talks at libraries and bookstores throughout the state on aspects of California history
