Brief Biography:
One of the seminal artists exploring multiraciality and hapa identity, Kip Fulbeck has captivated audiences throughout the world with his videos, performances, and writings. His uniquely personal monologues and multimedia shows combine stand-up comedy with a powerful and politically charged edge. Using his own Cantonese, English, Irish, and Welsh background as a springboard, Fulbeck confronts media imagery of Asian men, interracial dating patterns, and icons of race and sex in the U.S. -- constantly questioning where hapas "fit in" in a country which ignores multiraciality.Fulbeck's first solo performance, banana split & other mix ups, premiered at the Centro Cultural de la Raza in San Diego and was performed nationwide, including the 1993 Whitney Biennial. His videos have aired on PBS and earned several awards, including Best Narrative Short (1995 Los Angeles Asian Pacific American Film Festival), Special Juror's Award (1995 USA Video Festival), and 1st Place Video (1991 Red River International Film & Video Festival). He has also shown at the World Wide Video Festival (The Hague), the Videonale (Bonn), The International Video and Electronic Art Festival (Montreal), The Singapore International Film Festival and the New York Video Festival. In 1995 and '96 he served as a visiting artist at the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he co-founded and curated the first Asian American Film Festival held in Asia. Fulbeck teaches as an Associate Professor of Art Studio and Asian American Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is currently finishing his first novel, a fictional autobiography entitled Paper Bullets, which is being represented by Selene Ahn at The Miller Agency (212) 957-1933. Fulbeck also conducts youth outreach programs and performance workshops, and has worked as an ocean lifeguard for the past 14 years. A former nationally ranked swimmer, he enjoys surfing, Laker games, karate, guitar, video games, and spending time with his dog, Kita. He makes his home between Santa Barbara, San Diego, and Honolulu.
