Jonathan D. Katz is chair of the Department of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Studies at City College of San Francisco, where he teaches courses in American art and culture. The first tenured faculty in gay and lesbian studies in the nation, Katz also founded and chairs the Harvey Milk Institute, the largest queer studies institute in the world. Katz holds a doctorate in art history and has published and spoken widely on queer contributions to American art and culture, especially of the Cold War Era. Most recently, he co-authored a book with Moira Roth called Difference/Indifference: Musings on Postmodernism, Marcel Duchamp and John Cage (G&B Arts International, 1998), an article for the April 1999 issue of GLQ called "John CageÕs Queer Silence," and another article in the book Performing the Body/Performing the Text called "Dismembership: Jasper Johns and the Body Politic". A long time queer political activist, was a co-founder of Queer Nation, San Francisco, and founded the Lesbian and Gay Caucus of the College Art Association, the professional organization of artists and art historians.
