Industrial District

The Industrial planning district is the expanse of land flanking I-880 as it passes through the southern half of Fremont. It is flatland and even part wetlands. The most visible and notable feature here is the NUMMI (New United Motor) plant, an enormous automobile manufacturing center owned by General Motors and constructed in 1961. Although not a beautiful building with its modernist machine aesthetic, colorless exterior, and flat roof covered with smoke stacks and vents, the shear size of this 34 acre building complex whose main building alone is 2,200,000 square feet in surface area impresses all who drive by. This building is Fremont's greatest landmark.

Although most of the rest of this district has remained largely undeveloped, high-tech industries have recently been moving into it and building dozens of business parks.
These are all new and glitzy with striking zones of glass and with landscaped gardens displaying fountains and sculptures.

Pacific Commons massive 850 acre development project on undeveloped land west of I-880 is in the planning stage. Sunsets here are still strikingly beautiful.
