Abstract:
A vol in 9 Chpts with an author's Introduction. This translation of Ebrei
in un paese arabo (Bologna: Societa editrice il Mulino, 1978), presents a
historical account of Libyan Jewry & its inner dynamics during encounters
with Ottoman rule, Italian colonization, British occupation, Arab
nationalism & Libyan independence, & the impact of Zionism. Various
documents are used to portray the social, political, religious, & cultural
lives of the Libyan Jews. The colonial period (1911-1945) is emphasized,
& both the unifying & centrifugal forces within the Jewish community are
analyzed. Although the community survived the crises of WWII & the
pressures of Arab nationalism, the age-old relationship between the Libyan
Jews & Libyan Arabs began to dissolve as intercommunal tensions & pogroms
in 1945 & 1948 led to mass emigration. Further deterioration under King
Idris & the end of Jewish life in Libya after the Middle East War is
examined. 22 Tables. (Copyright 1986, Sociological Abstracts, Inc., all rights reserved.)

Goldberg, Harvey E.
Jewish life in Muslim Tripoli in the late Qaramanli period / by Harvey E. Goldberg.
Urban anthropology Brockport v. 13, no. 1, 1984, p.65-90.
Abstract:
The situation of the Jewish community in Tripoli at the end of the
eighteenth & start of the nineteenth century is described & analyzed,
utilizing historical data. Jews had the official status of dhimmis under
Muslim law, but this definition allowed a wide range of participation in
economic & social life. The cultural delineation of the Jews' position
itself could be used as a source of leverage in interaction with Muslims.
Jewish well-being also varied with the individual ruler of the town,
reacting to external economic & political developments. During this
period, the state-supported piracy was being undermined by European
powers. A weekly sports contest among Jews in the Jewish quarter is
interpreted as a representation of Tripoli's struggle against European
powers; & the contest attracted the attention of all the town's
inhabitants for this reason. 36 References. Modified HA (Copyright 1986,

Lycett, Andrew.
An unlikely partisan for peace. (Muslims, Christians and Jews)
Middle East, n234 (May, 1994):27 (2 pages).
Abstract:
Rafaello Fellah joins Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in establishing peace
between Muslims, Chritians and Jews. Both are part of a plan to hold an
inter-faith conference between the three religious sectors in Libya in Jun.
1994. Many Arab and Jewish leaders are skeptical about the plan, but
Gaddafi's credibility in the Arab region is helping to dispell their
doubts. Fellah claims that Gaddafi is serious is reconciling the three
faiths and is requesting the US leaders to accept Gaddafi's moves towards peace.
