Morphology, Distribution, and Habitat (After Mason, 1957)

The achene is 2-3 millimeters long, lenticular with a bifid style (sometimes trigonous with a trifid style), and enclosed by scales. The plant is widely distributed throughout North America. In California it is locally abundant in the San Francisco Estuary, Central Valley, Coast Ranges, and the Sierra Nevada.
